It's hard to believe watching her on the track now, but Sacajawheela was really intimidated by the idea of playing roller derby. "My daughter found the junior roller derby league and jumped right in. She inspired me to be brave, and we spent the summer learning to skate together, and it was one of the most memorable times of my life. Now I share something with my daughter that we both love. It's been 3 1/2 years and we are still hooked!"
Not trying roller derby because you're afraid to get hurt? Lucky had the same problem. "As a massage therapist, I get no benefits. An injury could potentially ruin my career. However, I decided that I can't live my life in a bubble. I could just as easily get hurt walking in a parking lot (and I have). After a few months of internal debate, I registered, bought my gear and started up later that month! I celebrate my 3 year derby-versary next month!
Thinking you are too small or skinny to play roller derby? Listen to what Chasey has to say: "When I decided to play roller derby, everyone's response was 'Isn't that for really big women?' I'm 5'4 and when I first started playing I was really skinny. At first I was intimidated by the hard hits from larger players, but I soon realized my size worked to my advantage. Being small and fast is great for jamming!" The Revolution always needs scrappy little jammers!
